The beaches look calm only in pictures on the Internet. In reality, the ocean is often stormy. Giant waves, which are so good for surfing, can easily carry away inattentive vacationers. Therefore, the local superstition – never turn your back to the water – has a practical meaning.
Another thing you can’t do on the beaches is bother animals. Some local inhabitants, such as the monk seal, are on the verge of extinction and are protected by law. Their rookeries are fenced with yellow tapes, going beyond which is strictly prohibited.
Touching or chasing sea turtles is also prohibited – for such actions you can get a large fine. The island authorities urge not to disturb the animals, of which there are very few left.
